Snacks & Meals

The snacks and/or meals served to children offer a well-balanced and nutritious variety of foods that follow the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Nutrition guidelines; vegetarian choices are offered as well.

Four separate weekly menus have been developed.  These are repeated on a four-week rotation schedule. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development reviews our weekly menus.  Menus are posted on the parent bulletin board at all times for your information.  We can only purchase or receive donations of food or beverages from an establishment permitted by the Department of Agriculture.

Apple Tree Landing is a breastfeeding friendly environment.  We welcome parents who wish to breastfeed their child throughout the day as well as offer proper storage and preparation for breast milk that is provided for your child’s consumption.  When requested, we will provide a comfortable space for breastfeeding mothers.

  • Morning Snack         9:30 am – 10:00 am
  • Lunch                         11:30 am – 12:00 pm
  • Afternoon Snack      2:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Please note – we are a peanut safe Centre.

We think that it is very important to create a relaxing and enjoyable meal environment.  We offer an “open snack” to all children attending the Centre.  During open snack only one table in the classroom “opens” for snack, allowing approximately 4-6 children to sit at a time.  This eliminates a transition for children, it allows them to extend their free play, respond to their hunger and fullness cues and serve and clean up after themselves; children are not forced to finish food that has been served.  Children also seem to have a more relaxing and enjoyable meal and an opportunity to engage in more intimate conversations with staff and other children.  Through this opportunity children learn life skills such as patience, responsibility and independence.

Infants are given the opportunity to explore their food, feed themselves and respond to their own hunger and fullness cues as well.

Staff are responsive to children’s cues around hunger and provide snacks and meals outside of regular schedule as required.
