Our Mission Statement
At Apple Tree Landing Family Education Centre, our mission is to provide high quality care to and enrichment of all children regardless of race, religion, culture, special need or economic status.
Our History
Late in 1987, a group of residents met around a kitchen table in the village of Canning to share a dream for the community’s children. Their goal was to provide enrichment and early education opportunities for children living in Canning and the surrounding neighborhoods. They wanted to ensure that every child and family would have the opportunity to benefit from participation in early childhood activities, as well as interesting workshops for adults and children. They also wanted to provide ways for rural parents of young children to support one another.
Because of this vision, Apple Tree Landing Children’s Centre opened its doors on Main Street, Canning, in January 1988. The first programs offered were Nursery School and After School care along with workshops for both adults and children. Since its beginning, Apple Tree Landing Children’s Centre has paid careful attention to providing inclusive childcare.
In January 2000, the Centre moved into a purpose-built building located near the elementary and secondary schools. Beginning September 2000, daily child-centered services were provided. This included “Before School” and “After School” care for Glooscap Elementary students, along with a full-day/weekday service for children aged 18 months to 5 years of age. Since that time, using an “emergent” based curriculum, we expanded to include infants from 6 months.
Thanks, are extended to the Department of Community Services, staff, community members and the many volunteers who contributed to make this a reality.
